Effects of nanocellulose fiber and thymol on mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of corn starch films

This study explores the preparation of corn starch (CS) films incorporated with nanocellulose fiber (NCF) and different concentrations thymol (0.1, 0.3, 0.5% weight thymol/volume solution (% w / v )) via solvent casting method. The resulting were characterized by functional chemistry, crystallinity, morphology, mechanical, thermal, barrier properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed presence intermolecular hydrogen bonding between starch, as well glycerol, hydroxyl groups thymol. film crystallinity decreased increasing concentration addition NCF at 1.5% increased tensile strength (TS) Young's Modulus (YM), but elongation break (EAB), oxygen permeability, water vapor permeability CS films. thermal stability was also improved NCF. to CS/NCF bio-nanocomposite TS YM, respectively EAB due plasticizing effect reduced properties effects on more pronounced higher In conclusion, inclusion both led improvement flexibility • Corn starch/nanocellulose fiber/thymol (CS/NCF/Thy) transparent.
